Canvas damage protection
Today, with pictures frequently travelling
to exhibitions abroad, the reliable securing of wedges is a necessary
prerequisite to avoid the problem of lost wedges and, worse still,
damage to a canvas due to a loose wedge becoming dislodged during
transport or movement. Such situations are not acceptable and
it is everyone's responsibility to protect a painting once restored.
Julian
Spencer-Smith's answer was to
design Wedge Retainers which he used initially on all pictures
restored at his Studio. They have been well received and are now
used by many restorers and liners worldwide.
The Wedge Retainers are produced in a dull gold
colour, being made from high density polyethylene and are quickly
and simply tacked into position.

Wedge Retainers offer a solution to securing wedges, but also
have the advantage over traditional ways of being very quick and
simple to apply and giving a neat, pleasing finish to the back
of the picture.
These Retainers are particularly useful when re-using old stretchers
where the problem of keeping the joint and wedges in the correct
position will be familiar to many.
